What is the best graphics card I can get for under 300, (or a few bucks over 300)...?

I would like to use either SLI or CROSSFIRE in the future as well....

Please help me out guys, I am new to all of these video cards and it kind of has my head spinning.......

I.E. I was thinking of an ATI hd 4870, nvidia gtx 280, or maybe a9800gx2....I dont even know, if I did not mention one that you think is better, list it please....

THanks all, help me make a decision please!

Around that price range, you could look into the 4870, 4850x2, GTX 260, and a GTX 280. The GTX 280 hovers around $350 but you can always find one on sale for around $300. All others are below $300.

Which would you recommend?

And thank you both for your replies, very helpful!

ALSO--- I recently ordered a 9800gtx OC 512mb ....should i send it back and get a more expensive card as i mentioned above?...
i paid ~170- 35 MIR = ~134. ....
should I get another one and use SLI? or just get a better card before the 30 days are up to return it....?

*(I figure if I get a card thats about 2 times better than the 9800gtx then I can then wait for the future to do sli and I would have about a 4x better gpu by only using 2 physical gpu's -get me?)

help me out guys!....on a time limit here! lol...kinda nervous sorry

Well, if you already have a 9800GTX, which you got for $134. I'd get another one (providing your board supports SLI), see if you can the second one for $134, too. So, you'd have two 9800's for $268, which is a lot less than you were willing to pay in the first place, and you'd end up with performance between the GTX260/GTX280.

I wasgoing to upgrade the motherboard after. I deciide..

also
IS there a single gpu I can get thatwould be better that two of those in sli ??

Thank u all!!

The 4850 is comparable to the 9800GTX. If you really have the money, and assuming your mobo supports Crossfire, you could invest in a 4850x2. Of course the 4850x2 does not perform exactly like 2 4850's, but it would still be higher than a 9800GTX.

Also, considering you already have a 9800GTX, the bigger you upgrade the better. If you upgraded to a 4850, you would maybe see a couple fps performance increase, all at the cost of $150. If you got a GTX 280, it would cost twice as much, but you would see way more than a few frames performance increase.

How about the 4870, or gtx 260?... would it be better than two 9800 gtx+ (oc) in sli ?

or would you say that the gtx 280 would be better than two 9800gtx+ 's ?

I'd rather get a single HD4870, I don't think it would perform that much worse than 2 x 9800GTX+, plus you don't have to use all that much power from the PSU. :D

Cheapest HD4870 is $180

Cheapest 9800GTX+ is $155

But it's pretty much proportional. If you get the HD4870, I assume it would run just a bit slower than SLi 9800GTX+'s but would consume less power. On the other hand, you could get another 9800GTX+ which is cheaper, but a new PSU might be needed.

Yeah, some good points. As mush as I like SLI, it's probably better to get a single, better card. Good suggestions, Omar!

You could always go for a 4850X2, those are as good as SLI 9800GTX's if i believe

EDIT: lol i didnt read through the thread, but i still suggest the 4850X2
