Best HDD diagnostic software

Is there any software available that I can use to scan an unformatted hard drive such as a new drive? I want to plug it in on a computer running XP and be able to check for bad sectors or anything wrong before using it in a new build.

Freeware would be nice but if I have to buy something that is OK too.

Who made the HDD? Most makers have their own tools on their website such as Segate = seatools.

Another good tool is HDTune http://www.hdtune.com/
Download the FREE trial of "pro" and it will point out any possible flaws with the drive and give you a lot of information you can use. Such as hours on down to failed sectors etc.

Might be what your after.

Thanks Twist86. I haven't bought the drive yet, not sure what I'll get, probably Samsung or WD.

HD Tune looks like what I need. I presume I would have to install the program in windows XP to run it? Or does it run from a CD? Then it would detect the unformatted drive and I could test it?

Well I know there is a installed version. I never needed to run it on a CD so I cannot answer that question. Sorry.
