well i know it all boils down to xp or vista. But is XP/ XP Media Center better than Vista? or is Vista the good choice?

depends on what you want to do

if your pc is slow, then get xp
if its fast, you may want vista, but its up to you

vista is more stable and secure, but vista is incompatible with some peoples programs and some hadrware vendors havent released drivers compatible with it yet

however vista is a big change from xp, so there is a learning curve

if you do get xp, remember your upgrade paths

xp home -> vista home premium or basic but never ever ever get vista basic its shit
xp pro -> only vista business or ultimate

i dont know about xp MCE.

gamingwise, you may want 64 bit in which case, get vista. XP 64 is crap, whereas vista 64 is good
vista also has directx10 for newer games
but vista wil mean you will have less ram free for games than on xp - NEVER buy a vista machine with less than 2gb ram. 3/4gb (or even more if you want to take advantage of 64 bit) is better

Its really your choice. Depending on your graphics card you can get slightly to extremely more fps with xp. But with xp there's no dx10. Its really your opinion, there's not really a clear answer. Most people use vista.

sort of. The graphics subsystem is actually much more efficient, but the reason there is a net loss of fps is because vista uses the GPU for drawing all the nice GUI elements via dierctx, whereas xp used the CPU and GDI to draw all the windows.

Vista is for ppl who have way too much time on their hands.
XP is far more stable, in my experiences with it vs. vista.
it took my computer with a single core celeron D less time to load 5 web pages on wifi running XP than it took my mom's computer wiht an AMD Athlon 64 X2 on a Wired Ethernet connection running Vista to load one.

for modern games vista is better. older games may not be compatible. if you dont have a computer powerful enough to run vista, you dont have a computer powerful enough for gaming.

Many Vid card reviews from TigerDirect will tell you that Most games get a small increase in frame rates on XP over Vista. Even with that said, I will stick with Vista over XP as I love dx10 and so do newer games. lol

however I have been having driver crashing problems lately..

Nvidia? I gept getting BSODs with n4_disp.dll, so i tried the 177.79 BETA forceware drivers and the problems went away

I think that the definitive answer is: IT DEPENDS :D

If you have a slower system, XP is probably a better solution based not really on gaming requirements but rather overall system requirements.

If you have a high-end rig and like the pretty eye candy, Vista and DX10 may be an option to consider.

I've played games with both, and found NO DIFFERENCE between the two. Yes, yes, I know Vista has DX10, but I sure didn't see any difference.

I actually had that problem a lot under Vista, and the problem went away under XP. No changes to BIOS settings or anything... same exact system settings, just fewer driver problems under XP.

I don't know if it's been suggested (had a quick scan through the thread first) but how about Dual booting XP/Vista and trying games(and other apps) in both to see which you prefer? ;)

Install XP first. XP doesnt like it very much unless its on thee first partition on the first drive

Then install vista wherever

and then the vista NTLDR will list it and you can choose

do you think its worth holding onto xp till the next windows comes out in like a year and a half?
