IMO for streaming media RealPlayer gives the best quality (at the same bandwith). But for playing mp3 files all players are fine, the choice is just upon preferences.

I use Media Player Classic. Small, simple, great sound. It relays more on your soundcard and such, but if you have a good sound system, it does wonders. It also has options for 24 and 32bit sound output which really helps if your card can handle it.

Winamp all the way. Cool visualizations, easy EQ settings...although "Annabelle the Sheep" from Realplayer wins my vote for best visualization. It's just downright awesome.

Winamp is waaay better than Windows Media for about 98% of what I'm trying to do for the pure fact that it isn't the resource hog the WMP is... Winamp hovers around 5% of system resources where WMP can go anywhere between 40% and 85%!!! grr...

I can run Winamp and Neverwinter Nights (highest everything) with Winamp (real-time quality), and it's fairly smooth (I have an XP 2700, and a 4200RPM hard drive). I once tried it with WMP, and everything was incredibly choppy, not to mention that the sound skipped/cut out.
