best one for me...

Recently I've been wanting to buy a new processor. On a budget of say $150 to $200 what would you guys recommend. I've been looking for a better one cause my games are real slow and everything. Also i'm into lightwave and a lot of artistic things on the computer which require me to run multiple programs at the same time. My current processor runs really slow and only take 2 or 3 open programs to get it to 100%. So what would you guys recommend?

Well are you upgrading motherboard and cpu or just cpu? If all you upgrading is the cpu then we need to know what motherboard you have so we know your options.

Please also include the manufacturer and model. This should be under mainboard tab on cpu-z. Aslo include all the information under bios(brand,version).

Finally tell us if this was a cutome build or from a OEM(OEM mean you got the computer from compaq, dell, HP, etc)

If it is a OEM please provide the company and the model number of the computer.
 
I guess it was custom built cause there is no model number on the cpu-z. I don't really know cause I bought the computer at the marketpro computer show. But here just look at the cpu-z.

Since we dont know the model. It hard to say what cpu your motherboard support.

If I had to guess base on the Chipset - VIA - KT133A then most boards I could find with this chipset max cpu was a
athlon "B" 1400.

I not even certain that you could go that high. On a computer that old it proberly not even worth upgrading the cpu.
 
so your saying i should prolly just get a new motherboard...hmmmm...i guess i could do that...I'm making about $120 a week which is prolly bad for most of you guys but for me, being under 16 and not having any taxes...i keep all the money. So lets say in about 3 weeks i'll have say $350 - $400. What would you all recommend buying on the basis of a motherboard? And another stupid question...you can buy motherboards with already builting in procs, can't you?

In the way that you mean no, you can by kits/bundles that include both the mobo and processor, but i doubt you will get best value. Best thing to do it buy them seperate and put them together your self. Are your comfortable changing the motherboard.

Before you can suggest products tell us the details of all your other components, inc hard drive, ram, graphics card.
By the look of the previous post you may need buy a lot more to upgrade your system. I doubt your ram is ddr, and your graphics card may be poor, and any upgrade may stress out your old power supply unit. I dont mean to sound harsh, but i think that spending money upgrading it would be a waste, and i'd hate to see you waste your hard earned cash

Maybe i'm wrong, post all your specs and we'll see

follow directions for registers dump (txt) with cpuz and post the txt file

and

use rivertuner to get all the information on your video card and post what video card you have

This should provide most of the information we need to help you
 
Well the problem i have been having lately is my old motherboard and proc. Everything else about my system is pretty top notch and up to date.

Dont take this the wrong way and I guess it a matter of opioun but I doubt many people would call your parts top notch in today standards.

Well as I expected on a computer that old you have SD RAM. any motherboard worth getting is not going to support SD ram. Graphic card AGP which is fine there still plenty of motherboards avaiable out there that AGP. It not a good video card but if you happy with it then it fine.

In order to get a new motherboard you would possiably need to upgrade the following

Definally
Motherboard
CPU
Ram
Maybe
PSU
CASE

Is your case a standard atx or not?

My case is brand new. And i wasn't really saying that my parts were top notch. I meant that i'm not worried about them because they are fairly new. I'm not sure what you mean by a standard atx case or not. But lemme just say that it's "brand new" in the sense that it's one of the dare-I-say "fancy" cases with like the lights and stuff.

And about ram...I have a few extra sticks of RAM at my house that I've got from different places. But I'm not at home right now so I'm not sure whether they're SD, DDR, PC100 or whatever. I'll post what it is when i get home. But for now you guys don't really need to know that to help me decide what motherboard to get. All that would happen if they WERE DDR is that i just wouldn't spend like an extra $100 dollars. But don't worry about that.

About my power supply. I guess this would be easier to decide after i figure out what I'm going to buy, (motherboard and CPU wise) but my current power supply is brand new (remember it blew?) and has 480W.

You don't have to read the rest of this post if all you care about is the thread, but i took apart my old power supply (the one that melted) and holy shit did it melt. Not only was there like a black soot everywhere inside, but one of the wires had melted apart and 3 of the resitors were rattling around inside.

EDIT: Holy shit, i'm sorry man I'm tired and totally out of it today. Yes my case is standard ATX. ;)

I would suggest getting a new mobo too, but if you don't want to since your current "Clock Speed 600.0 MHz", I can sell you a 1200Mhz duron that is a socket A, like your current CPU so it should work. Thats double the "clock speed" but a new mobo would be best.....(I have a mobo for sale to, but its the same socket A so if your going to upgrade it would be better to get a better one then that anyways.)

Could someone please help me out here i really need some help with this. My computer is pretty screwed up already and i need some help so i can get this right...
 
Well you have to make some choises first. do you want to make a amd system or a intel system. In both your old harddrive, cd drives, floppy, video card, case will work fine. What you need to decide is

A)amd or intel
B)keep your video card or new video card. if you keep your video card then you need a motherboard with agp.

Your new PSU proberly fine but if you could find the model and post it for us just to make sure.

You will need to buy for sure
a)motherboard
b)cpu
c)ram (unless you have some DDR laying around)

Finally how much you want to spend combine for those 3 things?
 
A) I'd rather stick with AMD because it seems to me, based on the poll here and a few other sources that people seem to like it more.

B) I want to stick with my videocard i have now because i works great for me and if i didn't want to stick with it it would cost me more money. ;)

PSU - ATX 12V Model 400U 480 Watts silent power

All together i'm prolly willing to spend around $600, but i'm not sure if thats enough now that i need RAM...
