Linksys 2G Wireless Router
2 Computers running Vista and one running XP

What's the best software to use with the server?

You really don't need anything big you know. If it's just for sharing a basic windowsXP will do, hell even windows 2000.
If you don't wanna buy you can try Ubuntu but you'll need to setup samba. That's something else

You can use XP, but remember you cant have more then 10 connections at once with XP pro. You might not even need to make a server, if its just file sharing you can just share out your drives on your computers.

I used an old Win XP Pro machine as a server for years when I lived with roommates. Should be more than enough for 3 computers. If you want to get a little more advanced do some reading on II6, I had mine setup as an FTP server as well.

If you do use XP Pro goto Folder Options > View and turn off simple file sharing.

You could try linux distributions, like Ubuntu which has a Server version (check on ubuntu.com). But if you want windows, you could try Windows Server 2003/2008.
