best OS for me

It will have to have space with the new install. Linux is EXT4 not NTFS, so you will have to give it what you think it will need. The OS itself is ~3GB, and I generally give it 40-60 GB, and have yet to run out of room.

Why would you even recommend XP? It is a out of date OS, not even netbooks offer that anymore. There is nothing wrong with Ubuntu, the only thing that Windows can do better is gaming but even then a huge chunk of games work in ubuntu under "wine" examples being just about anything by Blizzard or Valve which last time I check are one of the two largest PC gaming companies. Not to mention in my opinion and what seems to be in most ubuntu user opinions it is far more user friendly.

No need to hate on Linux.

Yeah, if you want a free OS, Ubuntu is the way to go.
What games or applications do you plan on running?

And if you do go with Windows, Windows 7 Home Premium is the way to go.
 
If you need something that runs fast on older hardware, you can't go wrong with linux peppermint. It's a dream to work with, and is super fast, even on a older computer. Great for day to day things. It's less then 512MB big to.

I would personally go with XP. It's the number one OS 10 years after its release and you can get the drivers for your laptop here, just go to the pulldown menu on the right of the screen and select Windows XP. And Windows 7 is Vista SE so if you don't like Vista you probably won't like 7.

I don't think it's out of date-- what, just because Microsoft won't release IE 9 for it?

You've got to love the irony, they support a 13-year-old browser IE6 on Windows XP but won't support IE9 "because of HTML5". Yeah, right, that's why Firefox 4 runs fine on it.

I still have NT 4.0 and that runs fine with Firefox.
 
Its out of date simply because that Microsoft is stopping support for it soon. Windows 7 is the best choice unless your computer will not support it, like my IBM laptop (it will support, but really laggy). Win. 7 is a lot more secure than XP also.

You're stating facts out of your own experience with XP. Many computers manufactured today don't have the drivers written for XP because the thing is 10 years old and will be ditched by M$ in 2012. It's not just because of IE9.
Right now it's not the number one consumer OS, believe it or not Windows 7 has taken the lead with Vista close behind.
