Best Pentium 4 or best Penitum D?

anyway, what is better? the best pentium 4 or the best pentium d
or is there some sort of adapter for AMD cpu's to socket 775? like the socket 478 to 775 ones.
Nope, at the price of the "best pentium d" you would be able to get a 5200+ or 7750 kuma and an am2 board, which you would be better off doing to be honest.

My board can support Pentium Dual Core. Not a core 2 duo or a pentium d, but in between the two. How does the Pentium Dual Core (see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_Dual_Core )
Rank against the Pentium D and Core 2 Duo?
(another note, the Pentium Dual Core uses the same power saving technology from the Core Duo series, Using only 65 watts at peak, compared to 165 watts of the Pentium D)

What exactly motherboard do you have? And actually the pentium dual core, depending on which one, can be better than the lower core 2 duo's. Although i suspect your board supports the e2xxx pentium dual cores, and if so, probably supports E4xxx core 2 duos.

my motherboard is: Intel 945GTP/PLM. It was released before Pentium dual cores were made and arent on the supported processor list, but they work nonetheless.

EDIT: I plan on getting the E5200 or E2220 (latter as a budget selection)
If it was made before having official compatibility with core 2 duo's, i doubt an e5200 would work as it is a 45nm. But as i have been saying...you may be better off to go with an am2+ system, as 775 is not going to see new cpu releases(intel is switching to core i3/i5/i7), while am2+ should support processors for at least another year if not more.

New Question

So, if you suspect my board can support e4xxx C2D's and e2xxx PDC's, would it support a lower number of either?
I can get an E2220 (pentium dual core) for $79 au with a cooler.

Perhaps another option would be to steal a computer from school with a Pentium Dual Core in it. lol.

To the OP, how much money have you got to spend on your pc, where in Australia are you located, and do you have a reliable mode of transport to carry pc items on? If you answer these for me, I'll try and set you up with something decent, since I'm from Australia too.

I currently have $75. but i'll get more soon.
As you can see from my sig, any dual core is better than what i have.
