Don't even bring up McAfee, that stuff uses more bandwith and asks more questions than an error in Vista.

Short version = it depends
 
Symantec anti-virus coporate client, takes up like 5mb of memory and that is all, no cpu cycles, no hassles. Its expensive and it is not the same thing as the consumer level product you buy at your local PC store.

Of course the best type of security is layered, and it starts with your network, then goes down to the client level at the end of it. NAT, SPI firewalls, spam fileters, fire boxes, routers, client software.
