Hi,

What is the best Operating system for a server? what's better about windows and what's better about Linux?

FREE!?!? I think its windows ;) <3 windows shame im not building a server anymore :L just rang up my internet company and found out how shit and slow my internet is :L building a desktop pc instead :)

Each have their own advantages, but in a very basic breakdown. Linux has less features, but tends to be far more stable and is free. Windows is the opposite.

Personally I prefer windows. The 2008 R2 version has been fun to play around with in class and I absolutely love group policies. Not a huge fan of linux just because I miss my GUI too much.

If you don't need to run the latest and greatest programs, I liked Win2k Server and NT 4.0 Server. Easy on hardware requirements.

2k3 was awesome and 2k8 just brought it to another level!

I have found that Linux and Windows both are stable, but Linux has the upper hand. I use Linux mostly for security such as proxy servers.

Windows does have tons of features like RMS, Federation services, group policies, read only DCs, etc... most of the features that windows has that linux doesnt (as far as im aware) is more beneficial to larger corporations.

if you want to set up a small network and have a dns server, dhcp, file and print sharing, ldap, etc... you can get the job done with linux for free.

Im by no means a linux expert but i think windows might have the edge in load balancing, clustering, and other enterprise type features.

I dont think linux has anything like RMS or Federation services... correct me if I'm wrong please.

windows also has some pretty neat terminal services features

I would look at CentOS for a linux server.
