Best upgrade path for my pc

Well guys it's been just over 4 years since I built this computer and it's starting to slow down. Right now I'm looking to upgrade it and have gotten into an argument with a friend concerning what gives the best performance increase per dollar. In my opinion upgrading to an SDD would give a much bigger performance than upgrading my CPU to another CPU which is compatible with my socket.

So CF, what's your take on this?

Depends on what you mean by performance.

Game performance? The new CPU.

Overall performance? Like in booting, loading files, snappiness, the SSD.

An e6850 at 3.4ghz is plenty fast, even for being 4 years old. I'd go with the SSD.

A SSD or video card. Dont know what kind of more performance your looking for. Could use more memory, but its DDR2. Would only upgrade hardware you could move to another computer if you rebuild later on.

If your computer is starting to slow down, doesnt that mean that it ran faster before,so then it also could be alot of crap on your computer, just reinstalling your os will make it faster.

Like others said, depends on where you want the performance. An SSD will greatly decrease loading times of the OS and programs. However, in applications like games/editing a new CPU will benefit more than an SSD.

So basically, if you want to see your computer boot up in 5 seconds flat, go with an SSD. If you want a computer thats actually fast with everything else, then get a new CPU.

EDIT - Actually if your talking about staying with the 775 socket then dont even bother with the CPU.
