Best way to backup computer

Hello:
I have a Dell laptop as well as a new desktop. Both run on XP. Not being all that computer literate I am unsure exactly the best method that I should use in backing up valuable data on the computers. I basically need to be able to retrieve the following in the event of a hard drive crash: photos taken from digital camera, music files and MS Word docs. I continually add to these files, so I would like to have the ability to create a recent backup of this data about once a month.

Any suggestions (datailed as to the steps that I must take to perform the suggested task) are much appreciated. I have a DVD-ROM drive in my laptop and dual drives on the desktop (DVD-RW, DVD-ROM). I am open to all suggestions, but want to avoid purchasing an external hard drive or spending much money on this. So, if it cost effective and will work properly, then I can backup this data on CD's or DVD's. I am talking about a few Gigs total of data. Thanks!!!

Yes, your type of data is best backed up on DVDs. Each holds about 4 GBs of data, so you may not need more than one or two.

The simpless way of burning a DVD is to put in a empty DVD in your drive, then "OPEN" the drive(It's in your "My Computer"). Place files you want to backup in the DVD Drive/Burner Window. The files should show up as "ghost" Icons because those files are temporary file, wich will burn once your done puting in the files. Once you put all the files in the DVD Drive folder, on the left you click "Burn this CD (or DVD)".

You could also use burning programs such as NERO, wich has step by step setups and such.
