Ok, well I might be selling my laptop pretty soon and I'm not sure if I have the restore cd's(I haven't looked for them). So is there any good software out there to clean up the laptop? I know how to clean all the program files, but is there anything in the registry that can be used towards identity theft? Or as long as I clean the cookies, cache, etc. from the internet I should be good?

just do a clean reinstall :D less hassle. i doubt any average user will find anything out in there unless they intended to.

You put in the xp (or w/e operating system the laptop came with ) CD in the cd drive tray when booting up. Select boot from disc, then reformat the hard drive, create new partition and install the OS.

what about reinstalling from the drive? with my old mobo pressing f5 during post would bring it into the screen where you reinstall windows, didn't need a disc.

if there is a recovery partition on the hard drive then you should be able to use that but even reinstalling windows doesnt mean that all your data will be destroyed, i have reinstalled windows before and still retrieved information of it using filescavenger.if i was you i would do some research on how to completely wipe the drive . i think it has to be formated so many times but im not sure.
