Best Windows OS?

Hey guys! Im new to the forum. I have been using Linux for the past 4 years and I love it. The only issue is I love gaming and not a lot of games are compatible...I was just curious as to which windows OS would be best for:

-AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ × 2
-250 Gig Hard drive : 2g RAM
-Nvidia Geforce 210 (512mb memory)

The operating systems I have available are Windows XP and Windows 7. However, I have no drivers available to install for it. The computer was given to me awhile back. Also the windows XP os disk was made for a dell computer, and the windows 7 for a laptop. However they work perfectly. I was just curious as to what I could do to install windows on my computer?

You can get drivers for Windows 7 through the hardware vendors. And in four years when gaming support gets even better on Linux we will welcome you back.
 
Thanks for the quick replies! I do have a Windows 7 64-bit edition. The only thing is...It was made specifically for my laptop. (Compaq Presario CQ56). However, it still does have the entire OS. Would this work? Then just download the drivers for all the hardware from the internet?
 
Often the edition of windows that came on a specific PC from the manufacturer will not work on another system. There is only one way to find out. Now if you had a retail copy of any Windows OS, then you could move it from system to sytem...note "move"...meaning Microsoft doesn't want it on two systems at once.
 
If that disc does not work, you can download the Win7 Images directly from microsoft here. Download the correct version, burn to DVD/flash drive, and you'll be good to go.
 
Where are you getting the key for Windows 7? If it is the COA sticker on the back of you laptop, it will not transfer to a new system.

This is what im scared of. I have a Windows 7 iso disk I burned and also the "recovery disk" which contains windows 7 for my laptop. Originally with Windows XP i installed it onto about 15 different computers with the same access key with no problem. I don't want to delete my linux system, install windows, and come to find I have to pay some insane amount for a system key. I guess maybe I could try it in virtual box first?

Actually, if he has not reformatted that laptop and never used that key, that key is still unused and will work on another system. If he still has the original OS from the manufacturer, they use a generic image, which is not the same key on the outside of the laptop.
 
Alright I propably rushed into this, but I burned the Windows 7 64-bit disk from Claptonman's link. However, during the "Expanding" phase of the installation it always stops at 70% and says:
The file may be corrupt or missing.. Make sure all files required for installation are available and restart installation.

Now my processor is AMD Athlon 64 Dual core. It is able to run 64 bit, but was made for Windows XP. Should I try 32-bit version instead? I've read all over the internet it could be a number of problems and issues...I even tried installing windows XP and it just reboots my computer at "checking hardware configuration...". I think the windows 7 disk really screwed up my system! What should I do?

What's up with you man? Like you are die hard Linux on minute, and crazy for Windows 8 the next. Actually the other way around this time.

LoL Windows 7 DID NOT screw up your system.
Simple Windows installation does not destroy computers lol!
You just did something wrong.The damage is not premanent so relax...

The reasons for your problem could be many such as:

-The disk from which you attempt to install OS is not designed for your computer's hardware.(Microsoft protection of course)...

-You did not burn the disk properly.(Damaged files)...

-Your BIOS options are not properly configured...

-You illegaly downloaded Windows from places like torrents and instead of getting what you wanted,you got something else...

-Your hardware is not working properly...

-And a lot more...


So what I would try FIRST is to install Windows XP 32-bit from the original disk,BUT NOT the one which is the RECOVERY DISK for a specific computer,but the standard one which can be installed on any computer which then after the installation is complete gives you 30 days period of it's usage.
If that OS installs fine then everything is okay and you obviously tryed a bad disk...
After that you can try the same thing with 64-bit...

Go back and try again. This time delete any partitions and create a new one. Start from scratch.
