Better processor/good overclocker on older mobo?

My current is an X58A-UD3R with an i7 920 DO @ 3.8Ghz
I'm wondering if this mobo would support a better newer/processor with a higher base clock & be able to get into the 4 - 4.6Ghz range without too much trouble?
A Noctua NH-D14 is keeping things cool.

bump

It would be possible, but I'm not sure if I would do it. There's more to it then just the mobo.

Theres an i7 970, but the price isnt worth it. Better to upgrade your platform to Z97 or X99

^^^^

You could go with a i7-__X processor but for the money it isn't worth it. There's some great processors out there that'll clock nicely and give you a future proof build. You just have to upgrade that mobo like Ninja said ;)

What programme are you running?
What is the rest of your set-up?
i7 920 still a good CPU, it may not be your CPU bottleneck your machine.

I know my GTX 670 Windforce struggles with the latest games at 1920x1200 & I'm planning to upgrade for a 970 soon, my 6GB of triple channel DDR3 would probably benfit from being upgraded (replaced?) as well.

He can only change to other socket 1366 CPUs. The 980x was the only extreme edition processor for LGA 1366. Nothing in that series will hit 4.6GHz without extreme measures.

Cisco001 has the right answer. We need to know what else is going on.

@Miseryguts- can you post the rest of your system? What games are you playing or what software are you getting bad performance?
