Between ATI and Nvidia who makes better video cards?

Who between ATI and Nvidia would you guys say makes the better video cards?

So far I have two computers a new one and a older laptop that both have ATI graphic cards and they both made my games graphics look funky, like their are odd shadows.

But yet with my sisters laptop with no real graphics card it doesn't screw up the graphics like the ATI one.

I don't know if this is a good judgement of the company since these are probably not their best video cards, but who do you think does better honestly? (although I guess like everything in life this will depend on the person's opinion but I would like to hear it anyway)

now lets see about price to performance.
there both about on point in this aspect, as in the gtx460 cost $179.99(cheapest) and the 6850 at $189.99(cheapest).which is rightly so as the 6850 beats out the gtx460.anyways there not one best card/company its just what you prefer.both offer there different technology but pretty much the same.it all depends if your an AMD or Nvidia fan.

Im using NVIDIA for years already. I never tried ATI yet. But my friends told me that its good. Maybe if I would build another unit, Im gonna try ATI. Then, I would compare it personally.
 
Personally, I go with ATi. Their budget minded cards tend to offer more bang for the buck in my experience. nVidia has done a much better job with this lately, but I just bought 2 6870s. One for myself and the other for a friend's build. People say AMD's drivers are terrible, but I've only had one real negative experience, and that was on my friend's computer, the 2D mode clocks are so low the card wasn't stable, so I had to spend an hour or two playing with it to increase those. Nothing really huge, but if I didn't know better I would've just thought it was faulty and sent it back.
Have never owned an nVidia card that was really respectable before lol. Some 7300GTs and stuff, but nothing worth mentioning so I can't really offer much personal experience with those. My recommendation is go with whatever gets the highest frame rates for the best price and ignore brand name.
 
Neither make the better cards, both have different cards in different price ranges that outperform others. You could buy a new Nvidia card, you could buy an ATi card for the same price, you could then try both, and you will find that both will be near enough identical.

Both have certain "gimmiks" that some people would find useful, but it doesn't affect the majority. For example, Nvidia with their 3D vision and Physx, ATi with Eyefinity and HD3D.

I've used both, both have always worked great (for their time), I like both, it is just a matter of who has the best offering in the price range at the time
 
id say if money was not object then nvidia they continuously pride themselves on having the better performing hardware however they are more expensive. If you choose amd they have a much better price to performance ratio and there cards are also very good.
 
Like mentioned both are as good as each other,But i do like Nvidia because of Physx...that might not mean alot to some people,but it really does make a diffrence.

I was using an HD4890..sold that and went back to my 8800GT for a bit,in the meantime i was playing Mafia 2 and just the way the clothes moved as you walked and how the debris flew off cars when cars blew up etc i didnt see this much detail on the ATI card.

I think you should really base it off of what you use your computer for.
I do a lot of video rendering in premiere, Which supports CUDA for hardware Acceleration- a big plus to me.

A big drawback is that If I ever decide to run 3 or 4 monitors I'll need to get two cards in SLi.
 
Since nobody else has pointed it out, Nvidia and ATI(now AMD) do not "make" cards. They manufacture the chips and I think the reference cards, but the actual manufacturing of the card is done by other companies.
 
I guess both companies have their advantages & disadvantages respectively.

Looking at the higher end GTX 470's and 480's, they are basically heat-producing giants, I remember a friend of mine cooked an awesome omelette breakfast on one of those whilst running a Crysis benchmark. The newer 6850's and 6870's tend to run a bit cooler. However nowadays games are adding support for PhysX, which of course ATi does not support.

Personally though, I have been an nVidia user for 5 years now, and I haven't been disappointed. And I'm sure I won't be for a long time.
 
True that, though Global Foundries was originally part of AMD, wasn't it? Was that before they acquired ATI?
