Beware Apple OS upgrade practice

Anyone thinking of entering the Apple empire should know that this corporation acts like an arrogant monopolist when releasing a new operating system. The day they release a new OS, they deny the customer the option of downloading the current, proven system. They force existing customers who need to upgrade to adopt the new OS immediately, even though these systems are is notoriously flawed by bugs and incompatibilities when brand new. As one example, in the fall 2015 Mac Office users lost work time because El Capitan was not compatible with it when the OS was new.

I learned this the hard way. I need to upgrade to Mac Office 2016. My mac was running OS 10.9, Mavericks, and the new app will not run on Mavericks. I decided to upgrade to 10.10 or 10.11. I spent a lot of time deciding, because I have suffered enormous loss of time when upgrading an OS in the past. I also chatted with AppleCare on 16 September 2016. I asked Nicholas to talk me through the process of upgrading in advance. He did, but he did not warn me that if I didn’t download 10.11 quickly, Apple would take the option away the next week. Then after dealing with a family medical emergency, I got back to the task on 27 September.

10.11 had disappeared from the App Store. I tried AppleCare again. Nykell had trouble understanding what I was saying and made me repeat. They offered me a link, which did not work.

I then wrote a letter to corporate headquarters asking them to send me a link to 10.11 so I could download it exactly as would have been possible a week earlier. An agent contacted me and said the company had released the brand new Sierra OS, and refused to send me a link to 10.11. I cannot believe this was technically impossible. He told me I could carry my iMac into an Apple store and they would install 10.11 but they would wipe my hard drive completely empty. It would be up to me to restore all my apps and data without any errors. Of course that was dramatically inferior to helping me download the OS without wiping my HD.

I am still working with my inadequate app because Apple refuses to make an OS version available for 2 or 3 years after release. Can you imagine a car company that refused to service its cars after they reach their first birthday? How can people be so arrogant or greedy? After I spent much time doing my homework and working through Apple’s system, Apple stiffed me. Beware.

That's why you download the installer file before this happens. It's also why you take a Time Machine backup before you upgrade in case you have issues and need to revert.

If you want the installer for El Capitan (10.11) let me know, because I do have that laying around.

That's why you download the installer for your current OS before upgrading, so you can reinstall that OS.

I said to download the installer for the current OS, it sounded like you were talking about something else ;)
You can't download an older OS after the latest version is released though. So you need to be paying attention to when the release date is and be sure to have a previous installer before that date.

You can download the older version if that's what your OS is, so if you're on 10.9 you can still download the 10.9 image from the App Store even if a newer OS is out. Once you upgrade though, you can only find that OS and the latest.

When I was on 10.11 I was unable to find a 10.11 installer on the app store after Sierra was released.
