I am having a terrible experience with my DELL XPS M1330 laptop.* Before purchasing it, I read a lot about Windows Vista and saw that many people were not happy with it.* Nevertheless, because some people seemed to be ok with it, I asked the Dell sales representative if I would be able to install Windows XP on this model if I ended up not being happy with Vista.* She told me yes, that I could.* Well, after I received my new laptop, I got very frustrated with Windows Vista, there are error messages in I.E., the performance is very slow (despite my*2GB RAM- because Vista takes up so much RAM; my new laptop is slower than my old 5 year old one!). So a DELL rep told me to call tech support to get Windows XP installed instead and lo and behold, they said there are no XP drivers for this model! So I cannot install XP on it after all.
I spent more than $1,000 on a brand new laptop and I'm very frustrated with it (I was a network support analyst and software troubleshooter for 3 ½ years).* When I open up Windows Mail (the Outlook express equivalent that comes free with Vista), it takes literally 60 seconds for the first email to open.* I have had to uninstall a bunch of useless Vista programs (the fingerprint gimmick, which doesn't even work for saving passwords on web pages) with an effort to save RAM.* But now I am stuck with this new laptop until I can afford another one in 4-5 years and I'm stuck with Vista, which even the Dell Tech guys are saying that it's comparable to Millennium, is just a temporary product and that Windows is working on a new OS as I type.* So whatever you do, don't get involved with Vista.* It's not solid, and it does not offer good performance. And then in a few years you'll probably have to spend money to get a better OS anyway.* My suggestion is to go with XP and don't go anywhere near an XPS.* Never mind that Dell was not willing to do anything to compensate for their error. Had I known beforehand that I would not be able to switch to XP, I would have purchased another model.* They called me to say they were sorry and that's it.* No compensation, no possibility to replace this laptop with another model. Their customer service was terrible in this situation.* Personally, even though I've always had DELLs, this is my last one.* Next time, I'm buying another brand.
