Hey guys,

I recently upgraded my PSU from stock to a SilverStone 750W one, I've noticed that my GPU's temp has gone up idle, I don't know why. Does it have to do something with the cord that is connected to the GPU?

I have PCI Express cords from the PSU that indicate 12V4, 12V3, and 12V2, which would be the best for my GPU?

It is the 512MB model not the 1GB one. I've also researched and some said to replace the thermal compound in the GPU.

What do you guys say? Thanks.
 
on GPU-Z my GPU is 64 Degrees C, my GFX card isn't that hot before until I felt it after idle, it felt really hot and burning.

How do i get load temp? Just load a game or something?
 
Sure or if you have MSI Afterburner/Kombustor you can do a graphics test there. You only need to run it for a few minutes.

Edit: did you actually put your hand on the back of the chip?
 
I touched the edge of the card, where no pins or anything are located... it was annoying because i was looking inside my machine while it was on and i kept feeling a hot little feeling and it isn't normal.

EDIT: hey one question, if I want to do SLI do i have to have the same identical GPU? or can it be the same model?
 
I am not quite sure what you can get away with as far as using two different GPUs but if you want to SLI I would recommend getting another 9800GT From any manufacturer. So just match the numbers and the letters that come after it and you should be fine.
 
SLI needs several things.

1, SLI capable chipset. AMD before 990FX isnt supported at all.
2. SLI capable motherboard
3. SLI capable PSU,
4. 2 Identical cards. Needs to be same model (basically you cant SLI a GT540 with a GTX550ti) with same memory (cant SLI a 1GB with a 2GB). brand doesnt matter as much.
 
Thats what I meant haha, same model but can it be different manufacturer, since my GPU is 512mb, can i SLI it with a 1GB model?

A bit on the toasty side. But it is not going to kill it. Have you cleaned out any dust of it lately? check to make sure that you have cables out of the way so that you are not restricting air flow in your case. you mentioned a new PSU. try to hide the cables if you haven't already.
 
yes. All the numbers have to match. Core count, core speed, memory count and speed. Basically you need a mirror card, with any brand name.

btw one last question, as I was installing my PSU, i think i broke the red cord connected to the CD Drive idk what it's called but theres a power plug and the one that plugs into the mobo, i broke that one, but i can still connect it, but sometimes the CD makes a sound, the sound is the one that is made when it is loading a disc.

is there anything I can do?

EDIT: do you think I should try taking apart my GPU and reapply thermal paste?
 
your probably talking about a SATA cable. If so, just take a visit to your local electronics supply house, best buy has them, and pick up a new one. they arent high. Our local computer shop sells SATA cables for $1 each.

How did you break it?

Edit: Ah I see. I though you meant the SATA power cable...

Probably not. I have done it before and I didn't see any improvements over the temps that I was already getting. If you feel that you are comfortable taking it apart and you want to, sure go for it.
 
As for my PSU upgrade, my PSU is located at the top right where my Disc Drive is located which is TOP LEFT, my PSU is bigger then my stock so when I was installing the PSU I rubbed it off and broke some of the chips from the plug off, so I think part of the Drive's chips from the outlet plug thing broke off.. so i think I may need a new Disc Drive .. ?

EDIT: also my hard drive has 3 ports for plugs, i think one is the SATA cable? one is the 4 pin power connecter and I don't know what the other one is called, but it is connected to it, would I need the 4 pin connecter plugged into the HDD?
 
no. those are for legacy support (PSUs that were out before SATA was around). you lug in the SATA pr the 4 Pin, not both.
 
wait.. on my HDD I can plug a power connector thing, but I don't know what that one is called, and I also can plug a 4 pin one from the PSU, then I got one SATA cable connected to it. So I'm sort of confused which to plug in, originally with the stock PSU, I had the SATA cable and the power cable connected, not the 4 pin one,
 
The Sata cable is flat and thin. SATA power is flat and wide. IDE power is taller and has 4 pins that the connector slides over.
 
silly question...but its a single slot card i assume, my friend owns one, and we dusted it after a year or two of use...and quite a few dust bunnies came out, have you cleaned yours?
 
yeah, i cleaned mine, i use a compressed air can to spray the dust out.
edit: but I haven't got a chance to open the card out it self, if I did i'd have to change the thermal compound.
