My brand new computer has been having problems with overheating. Haven't installed windows yet but everytime I try to boot it up it will give me a overheating error....
Motherboard
CPU

I bought one of these and installed it. No high temperature error message has came up yet and my computer hasn't shut down yet but when I go into the BIOS under Power or whatever, it tells me the CPU temp is around 94-96 degrees Fahrenheit constantly and the Motherboard temp is around 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

What is the problem? I turned the computer off and felt everything and I don't think it's that hot. Is this temp normal or way high?

Those temps are pretty good. What kind of error is it giving you?
So those are normal temps? 95 degrees Farhenheit. I really hope so. :) Before I installed the other fan/heatsink onto my CPU, I kept getting overheating errors, right after I turn the computer on. I haven't installed Windows yet and it is giving me a can't boot HDD error (I think because I haven't installed an OS yet)

Yea, that's relatively normal. FYI, we all use metric here, so that's what, 36C? Something thereabouts. It's fine.

Okay I'm gonna go try to install Windows so I'll be back later and update you with what happens. I really hope it works... Thanks for your help! :D

Okay I got the computer running with no temperature errors at all. The temperature is constant around 95 degrees for the CPU and 75 for the CPU with no random shutdowns or anything.

Now the problem is that when I try to boot up the computer (or try to install Windows) it gives me the error code "Reboot and select proper device or Insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key"

What does this mean and how am I supposed to get past this in order to install Windows?

Hey you should see my computer, I got a pentium 4 3.2 presscott and it goes from 40c to 70c+. thats over 150f... I mean come on... whenever I simply use a program through deamon tools or anything that requires even a bit of cpu it's on average 65-70c! God I hate pentium 4's

Are you using SATA Hard drives? If you are you have to install Sata driver at the F6 prompt at the beginning of installing windows. Have you gone into the bios and set it up correctly? We need more information on your setup. What hard drives and how are you using them?

tell me about it. I have the 3.4 ghz P4, runs at about 50c idle and 60c or higher when being used with cooler that has heatpipes....

I'm getting an E6600 as soon as I get my taxes back.

Yes I'm using a SATA...this is the one. I set it so it boots up first in the BIOS setting but nothing helps.

The bios will see the drive, but windows setup won't until you install the SATA controller driver. Boot to the motherboard cd and it will start a utility that will put the driver on the floppy for you. Install windows XP, at the beginning it will say Press F6 to install scsi or raid driver... press F6... it will continue to load balance of drivers and then will ask you for the floppy. press "s" to load driver from floppy. When it scans your system, it should then find your SATA hard drive and you will be able to partition and format and then install windows.

What are you talking about? if the motherboard is anything new, then you dont need SATA drivers. The F6 option is for RAID drivers, not SATA. I would just recommend trying to install Windows again.

I wouldn't count on that..... I've built a few systems and most have needed the SATA driver in order for windows to see the SATA drive on installation.

I have a similar problem if you could help, The setup I currently have is dvd-driver is pata and my hdd is sata... and the problem I have is that I dont know how to change the Hdd as my primary IDE. When I enter bios it detects my dvd pata interface as master for second ide but my HDD is listed as third IDE. Do you know the option to switch it from third to primary?

You can't... Your primary and secondary channels are the standard IDE ports. Your third channel will be your SATA port.

Theres very few chipsets that need the F6 option to install SATA drivers anymore for XP, used mostly for RAID drivers now! It sound like hes not getting it to boot to the cd!
Instead of changing it in your bios, look down at the bottom of the boot screen and see if it says something like press such and such key for boot order.

Okay so now I have already transfered the motherboard SATA driver to a floppy disk and I am in the Windows Setup screen (blue with light grey letters)

I have already hit F6 to load the SATA drivers and pressed S again but now a screen comes up with this on it:

Code:
You have chosen to configure a SCSI Adapter for use with Windows,
using a device support disk provided by an adapter manufacturer.

Select the SCSI Adapter you want from the following list, or press ESC
to return to the previous screen.

Intel(R) ICH8R/DO/DH SATA RAID Controller (Desktop ICH8R)
Intel(R) ICH8R/DO/DH SATA AHCI Controller (Desktop ICH8R)
Intel(R) 631xESB/632xESB SATA RAID Controller (Server/Workstation ESB2)
Intel(R) 631xESB/632xESB SATA AHCI Controller (Server/Workstation ESB2)
Intel(R) 82801GHM SATA RAID Controller (Mobile ICH7MR/DH)
Intel(R) 82801GR/GH SATA RAID Controller (Desktop ICH7R/DH)
Intel(R) 82801GR/GH SATA AHCI Controller (Desktop ICH7R/DH)
Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH7M/DH)
Intel(R) 82801FR SATA RAID Controller (Desktop ICH6R)
Intel(R) 82801FR SATA AHCI Controller (Desktop ICH6R)
Intel(R) 82801FBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH6M)

And it gives me 11 different choices...which one am I supposed to choose? Probably not any of the ones that say Server/Workstation at the end and probably not the ones that say Mobile at the end. Probably one of the 6 that say Desktop at the end, but which one?

Once I get this question answered, I will basically be done!
