About 8 months ago my comp fried, I think it was the motherboard.
I have never really gotten the chance to fix it because I am only 13... :P
It was an alright gaming comp, but now with all it's current hardware, if it worked it wouldn't be very good, that's why I really want to turn it into an awesome gaming rig that can play the latest games (crysis :)). Doing so... I would be replacing every single part except for the sound card, HDD and DVD drive. Here are some parts that I saw on newegg.

get another gig of RAM and get a cooler for your CPU and you shouldnt do bad, max settings im not sure but itll certainly look very pretty
 
yeah 1GB wont do crap nowadays, also dont expect to use DX10 if your on XP, so crysis wont look as good no matter what you do.

1 more GB of RAM, down the CPU to a 5600 and overclock it. The 6000 is unstable [what I've heard]... So best off getting a 5600 and oc it

I've also heard that Crysis can lag down a GTX and such... :P

Looks good, here are some questions :P
1) Aren't AMD processors better for gaming?
2) What kind of fan and power supply would I need if I overclocked it, and how much should I overclock it?
3) Would I need a better fan for it, like ride3k said?
4) Does DirectX10 run on XP?
5) Is gaming overall better on vista?
6) Would the motherboard be able to handle another set of those RAM sticks with a difference that makes it worth the extra $50?

3. No if you not ocing a lot.
4. No at the moment. Depends on if Microsoft release any updated
5. Some ppl say there are cabilabilty issue with Vista at the moment. but most thing run OK, and more games will require Vista to run in future.
6. Don't know which RAM stick you are talking about. Can't tell
 
unfortunetely newegg is down right now for me but what do you mean the extra 50$? you have to have ram, and you do not need to fill the extra two spaces. but make sure that when you install the ram not to install them right next to eachother, there will be multicolored slots, stick them in the same colors for the added benefit of dual-channel, which effectively doubles the memory bandwidth (correct me if im wrong someone)

1) AMD was better, until the Core 2 Duo's and Quads came out ;)
2) Fan is any type... PSU... probably above 400W. I'd say 20A minimum on the 12+ rail too.
3) No, stock fan from the manufacturer is fine. Might wanna get some Arctic Silver 5 though...
4) No. Vista only.
5) Depends. Games are faster, but some are worse. Little crashes and bugs here and there down the quality... And some video cards (like the 8600) perform better in Vista than XP)
6) As long as the motherboards supports the type of RAM, and is within the maximum.

The motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130129) has four DIMM slots, I was originally going to just buy the 2 sticks together, to have 2 gigs total RAM. My question is, should I spend another $50 for 2 more sticks (for a total of 4 gigs) or would that make the performance worse. Also, what is the point of the different colored DIMM slots?

No problem :)

The yellow colored slots represent Dual Channel function. In other words, 2 memory sticks work together as one and gain performance. 2 sticks = Dual Channel. 4 sticks = Non dual channel.

That motherboard will support 4GB, but your operating system might not.

A regular operating system support 3.25GB or memory max, 3.25GB max operating systems are "32-bit".

64bit operating systems, support over 3.25, 128GB to be exact. You can run a 32bit operating system with 4GB, but .75 of the memory will not be utilized... only 3.25GB.

Depends on your budget and operating system.

4GB = Bit better performance, future proof, 64bit

2GB = Dual channel, slightly future proof, 32bit

2 sticks (if 2GB) need to go into the yellow slots to allow dual channel function. And that's basically it! Motherboard will do the rest.
 
Is vista 64-bit? I won't be getting it now but if it is I'll probably just get another 2 sticks when I get it, if it will significantly help.

Depends what type of Vista :P

Vista came in 32 and 64bit versions...

Right-click My Computer, Properties, and it should tell you there.
 
I don't have vista, I'm on a mac, it's my school laptop.
Does each version (probably will get home premium) come in both 32 and 64-bit? Or is it only ultimate or something. Since 64-bit can take 4 gigs of RAM it is better than a 32-bit OS using a dual-channel with 2 gigs right?
