Biggest Question of All Time!

I run XP Pro SP2 at home for my gaming rig and play all modern games (not with the setting maxed because I have an older video card) and I only have 2 gigs of RAM and my machine never runs out of memory. Even though most of the video settings are video card technology reliant, not reliant on the amount of RAM you have.

Also, by 2009 Vienna is slated to be out by then, and if you look at MS's past about how they release a crappy OS in between a good OS release *cough - Windows ME - cough* what is there to say that Vienna will actually be what Vista was suppose to be. I mean MS dropped a lot of technologies out of Vista when it got closer to release. Where is the EFI support that was promised with Vista?

Again, it all comes down to system bandwidth, and with current bandwidth abilities developers have plenty of space to make stuff work. Plus some things are changing in the video game industry. For example, ATI is releasing source code for their hardware now, meaning you can have open source drivers, which will access the hardware directly. Direct X may be a thing of the past if MS doesn't pull their head out of their collective asses to fix the mess the made with the release of DX 10 and vista. Vista is a horrible OS that eats up so many resources because of how it is designed. It forces everyone to upgrade hardware, and really it offers the end user very little features that benefit its use over Windows XP. Look at what the open source community has done with Open GL. Look at things like Compiz and Beryl desktop managers, which most of you have seen. So, now imagine what happens when the developer of the hardware releases source code or source APIs for developers and the open source community. You no longer need Direct X at that point. Hopefully, it will take off, ATI just recently announced this. I read it on digg.com

this one works with vista 64, i even got it to work with xp 64 lolz

Thanks man, but I'm after a wireless USB adaptor :)

and buy the sticks off your friend only if they are the same branda/model as yours, you'll get different max oc's on them

They're the exact same sticks as mine.

tlarkin, I see your reasoning. I have heard that Vista is a bit of a flop... But I know a few people that have it and they love it... I rekon I'll get it unless something great really happens to XP with SP3, if and when that comes out.

I think I'll get the other 2GB of RAM, because I'd only be upgrading sometime in the future. Would it still work in Dual Chanel even if I can't see it all?

Hmm, 32bit is winning at the moment...

Right, so you're saying don't get Vista yet, wait to see if XP SP3 includes DX10? And don't get the extra RAM just yet? I think for £30 though, I can't go wrong!

What does that mean? My adaptor is pretty old :P

My point was to get a x32bit OS, like most of the others have said. Get Vista, keep XP, it's up to you, I'd advise you not to make the decision till you need to, as in when you get that dx10 card. By then more info about SP3 will have definitely popped up, making all decisions clearer.

Tlarkin brings up that this "vienna" is scheduled for 2009, which poops on my point that Vista is the future, but not the other ones. The two main reasons for X64bit tech as I see it is the memory addressing, as other have pointed out, that includes any extra RAM and memory mapping which is very important in todays games, the games keep getting bigger and 32bit tech is unable to keep up with mapping the 4-6Gb game files regular seen. Also x64bit tech is able to address all x64bit proc registers, whereas x32bit was only able to efficiently store and access half of the 64bit registers. At least I believe that's how it goes, I haven't kept up with it lately.

Early adapters, people who need the latest tech, regardless of it's condition. Sometimes referred to as non-objective power-users, other times as fools.

Ok, I'll wait to see what happens and what's around the corner... My only concern is the internet and 32bit apps not working with it...

Thanks a ton for the help guys!

I am not telling you not to get vista 64 with 4 gigs of ram. I am telling you that it is not needed, nor is it 'future proof'. I am just giving you details on the situation to make your own decision. Personally, I won't ever load vista on my machine, it is too resource hungry and I don't like the UI that much. I also want to wait until there is at least a SP1 for Vista before i would consider it. I have been using it at work on a test machine since beta RC1 and have not been impressed with how MS progressed the OS into what it is now. XP is solid and good for everything in my opinion so I will stick with it. I don't work sales, nor will I ever go back to sales, so I am not pitching anything to you. I am just giving you some facts to go off of to make your own decision.

I do however, reserve the right to say, I told you so!:D

This looks like an excellent deal! I know that I'd have to do a clean install of XP and then Vista if I wanted a clean install, but I'd do it...

Anyway, it says there is instructions on how to send off for a 64bit DVD for like £7... So you buy this, get the 32bit Version and can send off for the 64bit Version, sound right?

Also, how many times could I install it, is it like the OEM version?

Ideas?

My understanding is that Vista does not support both library files for 32bit and 64bit versions. So, you have to run either or. I suspect there is an upgrade option, but have no idea about what you are asking about. I do not know of anyone who offers a $7.00 upgrade.
