Bill Gates Stepping Down?

SFR said:
I think he is currently worth around $40 Billion.

Lets say, according to you, he should give away half of his earnings to charity... Do you give half of your earnings to charity?

Lets not forget that his $40 Billion is not in cash. It is tied up in assets and investments. Until you give 50% of your paycheck to charity, I believe you do not have a leg to stand on, so to speak.

As for me, I give about 5% of my paycheck to charity.

Are you serious? How can you compare me and my money with Bill Gates, i work to put food on the table etc, and i work hard thank you very much, Bill Gates has probably worked hard YES, but to compare me and my money to Bill Gates and say 'why dont i give 50% of my earnings to charity' 0.01 % of his money is a Million, he had enough money to live BIG every single day for the rest of his life if he still give 99.9% of his money to Africa. Whereas me if i gave my money to charity i would be living on the streets begging for money... Stupid answer you gave me son.

I think SFR's point was that you shouldn't be critcisizing and insulting Gates when he gives more to charity than you do even if it is scaled down to accurate proportions.

to be honest its good call for him to step down after the disaster that is vista, where he took far to much of a hands on approach.

And i feel his descision to "retire" from actve role had been forced upon him by the board.

Thank you Yasu, that was my point.

If ANY OF US gave 50% of our money to charity we would not be able to provide for our families etc... however, if Bill Gates gave 50% of his money to charity, where would this money come from? ..his Investments. So, for charity he should sell half of his Microsoft stock and half his home and half of his other investments and assets?

I think we need to take a realistic approach. I look at a thousand dollars as a lot of money. However, a thousand dollars to my parents is not that much money... They still only give about 5% of their income to charity, which is plenty of money...

How about ALL of the other billionaires in the world?

What about the Walton family? They treat their employees horribly, but because they sell products for less money nobody cares... Why do we fault Bill Gates for ONLY giving a Billion dollars to charity when most people do not want to even give loose change to the Santa's outside of grocery stores?

Anyway, this conversation has gotten way out of hand. If you want to debate Bill Gates' charity contributions there might be another thread.. and if you do a search and find nothing, create a new thread.

Oh and the only two people who can call me "son" are my parents. I know nothing about you or your family and that was your 16th post...

if i was in his posistion it think it would be hard keeping a job knowing that i had so much money and could go around the world and put it to good use. just think how far 1 million could go in a poor family of 5 in Louisiana.

If I was BILLY boy I would not worry about a'holes in LA!!! If they were that stupid to live BELOW sea level!!!They got what Mother Nature had coming to them.

Yeah, the children, homeless and not-so-wealthy people were so stupid. C'mon, they could have just gotten a job and earned enough money to move up north in just a 2 days!

Your statements are surpassed by none.
