BIOS won't overclock

so i just did a hardware upgrade which included an MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum mobo (really dont' plan on ever using tripple SLI, so i opted for the 750a over the 780a chipset) which has been fantastic except for one thing...i can't seem to overclock. Now, the first time i overclocked everything seemed just fine, CPU-Z reported my speeds, both cpu and RAM exactly as i had set them in the BIOS. When i tried to push it higher, a little too much, it crashed and i had to clear the CMOS to go back in and try a lower overclock. Problem is, since then, CPU-Z has reported nothing but the standard speeds no matter what i set them to in the BIOS. My BIOS still shows that my speeds are where i left them at, but considering the bug that i'm getting, i'm not sure that means anything. I've updated the BIOS version to 3.2 so i dont' know what else i could do to fix this...

nah, windows is giving me the standard cpu clock as well: 2.8GHz (i'm hoping to hit at least 3.2GHz). and cpu-z read it right the first time. I should also note, i updated my BIOS using MSI's online "live update" utility. I was going to do it manually but the instructions that come with the BIOS update don't make ANY sense to me. I'd like to try reflashing the BIOS manually, as i was never a fan of flashing from windows.. so if anyone could help me out on how to do it i'd at least have something to try.

as a reference to what i'm trying to figur eout, here's the complete readme form the 3.2 BIOS download:
EDIT: nm, figured out how to flash the BIOS once i found a way to make a win98 bootdisk.

but properly flashing the BIOS hasn't changed anything, and even in my BIOS settings certain things disagree. like the actual control screen for the multiplier says i've turned it down to x13, btu in the hardware status it still says it's at 14. maybe there's just somethign very wrong with my board...should i try going back to the 3.1 BIOS? the 3.2 is really only necessary if you're using a Phenom...according to what i've read anyway.

k, sooooooo...
when i went back to the 3.1 bios i was able to get my BIOS settings to stick...once. all i did was change the ram clock rate to 1t. btu after that when i tried to change it it reverted right back to default. since using 3.1 wasn't helping i went back, again, to the 3.2 BIOS. I did manage to overclock everything by using MSI's windows overclocking utility; "Dual Core Center" i'm not really a fan of doing it that way, and i still can't get my RAM clock rate to 1T, but at least it's something.got my cpu running at JUUUUST over 3.2GHz and my RAM at DDR914 as reported by both that program and CPU-Z. Not quite as good as i could have gotten via BIOS, but hey, i'll take what i can get...for now anyway.

does anyone know of any good overclocking software that i can use to get something close to the overclocking results i was going for? MSI's support solution was a new beta BIOS...which didn't solve anything

well... i never ENabled it. it's default is off. but yeah, cool 'n' quiet is off. pretty sure i got a defective mobo...but it's such a WEIRD defect. The BIOS settings are being saved (well except for the CPU multiplier for some reason) because they're still at the same settings when i go back into them, but they're just not being APPLIED to my hardware somehow. i'm hoping to badger MSI's support staff until they give me a new one. This is the second time i've had problems with an MSI board, that's how i ended up with the ASUS on my last build. Guess i should have learned my lesson last time...

well this board's gettin RMA'd. Would have just gotten a different kind altogether but i need the four PATA channels this board affords me, and i hear good things about the functioning ones.

welp, it works now. at first the new mobo was giving me the same problem, but then all of a sudden it worked! idk, but i'm not gonna question it so long as it continues working.
