I have a Dell Dimension 3100. My main hard drive is a Seagate 160 gig SATA drive. There is space for a second SATA drive, but i chose to get an IDE drive, since they are better for storage of audio and video. The PC has ONE IDE interface for a max. of TWO IDE devices. I set the HP DVD Writer jumper to Master, and the Seagate 300 gig drive jumper to slave. I attached the Black connector to the DVD drive, and the middle (grey) connector to the HD, but the BIOS just won't identifiy either drive. However, here's the weird part, XP Pro detects BOTH drives fine. The reason i need the DVD as Master and HD as slave, is because i can't install an OS on the HD or boot from it, unless the BIOS recognizes it.
Also, I used an 80-conductor IDE cable to set the drives to cable select, but the BIOS still does NOT find the drives. Last, but not least, i even reset the CMOS, and it did an "automatic IDE configuation", but, for some unknown reason, the BIOS opted to disable ALL IDE devices...Since XP detects both drives, then that means they're connected correctly, right? I'm stumped, the only other thing i can think of could is that the jumper blocks could be defective, is this likely?
Thanks.
