BitTorrent?

Hey Guys,

If any of you are familiar with BitTorrent, I would really appreciate your help. My system is pretty fast and I am behind a router. I forwarded ports in order to allow BitTorrent to connect and for a while I was getting download speeds of around 100 kb/s. I closed the BitTorrent application and now I have download speeds of around 12 kb/s after reopening. I have let it sit for about one whole day and cannot manage to get above about 16 kb/s. I really am having trouble with this. Can someone please help?

Sorry to be a dissapointment but the software didn't work. I tried using it but it would not improve my download speed. I would like to also try to stick with BitTorrent if possible, but I don't demand it. Could someone please help? Thanks in advance.

You wont get a constant download, its not like downloading from a website. The speed depends on the number of seeds, the number of peers, the ratio of seeds to peers, you upload speed, the speed you set your upload to, the number of downloads you have. And many more no doubt.

In short all of those variables are sent tot he tracker, the tracker ( a remote server) decides what down speed you get. If you limit your up speed to 1K the tracker hates you and cuts your down speed, if you give unlimited up and trans at 50,60,70 100K up speeds it likes you and gives you a healthy downlaod speed. Trackers are generally slow to repsond due to high traffic loads and it often takes a few minutes to stabalise your speeds and caps.

What net connection do you have? Ar you limiting your upload speed.

Oh and just to cover it, bit-torrent and torrent networks are perfectly legal, its only if you donlwoad copyrighted material through it it becopmes illeal, so as long as you are downloading "legal" stuff its all fine. Very shifty topic on these boards, watch it

I have set an unlimited upload and download speed and I am using a cable modem but I still get speeds around 5kb/s. Thanks in advance.

Well, for starters.. limit your upload speed. Don't give it unlimited upload stats. Next, check your port forwarding again. You may have had it at such... 192.168.1.11 or such in your settings and it could have changed from .11 to something else. Also, check the ports. Some programs randomize their port selection so check the ports in your port forwarding settings and the ports in BitTorrent if they still match. If not, you should change it to use just one port, such as 6889 instead of randomizing it if this was the settings.

Then, check the tracker making sure it's not down and you are just not uploading from other peers. Also take into consideration the number of peers and seeders as said above.

Additionally, it could just be your cable provider. They see that you are using a lot of bandwith downloading and since they feel you don't pay them enough, they limit your usage. ;) Call them and give them your .02 cents.
 
Change the port number to something around 52300, then port forward it because the default ports are blocked by alot of trackers.

Hey, thanks for all your help. One last thing. I finally was able to download a bunch of video clips. After I finished downloading them only a couple of them worked. I don't think the files were corrupt or anything and I know the download was completely finished. All the files are there but when I play most of them it says Windows Media Player Error. Please Help.

Hey...

Hey, umm they are all Window's Media Player files. A couple of them play in Window's Media Player but the others don't, and they are all the same file types. I feel like something is missing from the files because the ones that play in Window's media player have the first (frame) of the movie as like the icon for the file, but the others don't. Please help.

Sorry... they are windows movie files. I don't know if this is what you are looking for. If not, how do I find the extensions? Anyways, it is werid because some of them play and others don't. Please help.

Yeah...

Yeah, but the problem is on my computer, they are not there. Is there a quick way under properties or something to view them? Also, doesn't the file type give you enough and if they are all the same file type, shouldn't they all be playing? Also, I noticed that the ones that do work have about the same file size as the ones that don't, but the ones that don't have a much lower (file size on disc) compared to the ones that do work. Thanks in advance.
