Bizarre NIC in laptop, Very strange!

I have the strangest thing going on with my netbook that I have ever seen before. My NIC is an Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114P, and I run XP. The netbook itself is an Asus Eee PC.

SO, this is the deal. My wireless connection works fine. My hardline NIC connection works ONLY when hardlined through a router. If I hardline it direct to a modem, it will not surf. I am still able to pull a valid I.P. but cannot run a ping test or surf through any of the browsers I have installed.

I have tried and have had the problem on various modems and routers. I am stumped. I have used many different ethernet cables as well.

I have tried it (with the same result) in safe mode, I have restored the system to a few months back (when I KNOW that the NIC worked with a direct connect to the modem)... Nothing I have tried as of yet will let me surf while I am directly connected to the modem, but a direct connect to a router works fine.

I have un-installed and re-installed the driver, I have un-installed my firewalls and anti-virus. I have even tried to config the adaptor to 'AUTO' instead of the 100Mbps Full or Half Duplex settings..

For your info, when I direct connect to the modem, it recognizes the connection, gives me a valid I.P. but will not ping. If I unplug the cable, it recognizes that the cable has been unplugged. This is just really bizzare!

This wouldn't be a big deal, but I need my NIC to work on a daily basis, because at my job, I have to determine sometimes whether it is the ISP or a customer's computer causing connection problems.

I would like to figure this out and if I can't, my last resort will be to install a USB/Ethernet adaptor.

Any ideas of something I may be missing here? Thank you in advance for your help!

Sometimes when connecting between pc and router and then connecting straight to the modem, you need to do an ipconfig/ release and then ipconfig /renew. Also shutting the system down usually helps.

I have tried all of that already.. One thing I have noticed is that when I am direct into the modem, it will release but not renew it. It will never ping either. Direct connect to the router, everything operates as normal.

I have disabled and reenabled the adaptor. Rebooted everything, tried new cables... I have covered all of the basics.

Whatever my problem is, I am baffled. I have worked in my profession for 12 years. I deal with connection issues every day. By no way am I an expert, but I know the proper troubleshooting procedures and I have never come across something so bizarre before! Good thing it is happening on my computer, or else I would be spending a lot of time on a client's location! lol

Thank you for your advice, and I will keep this thread updated on any progress I come upon!
