Black screen after full screen gamming

A few times, when I exit some games, I just get a black screen. I can see my cursor and move it around, but that's all. What really gets me, though, is that my machine still works. I don't think I can click on stuff and just not see it, but if I say press the power button, the screen flips back to the desktop then shuts down. This isn't one game, either. It's happened with both Doom 3 and Need For Speed Most Wanted. I don't have much else on here.

The last time it happened with Doom 3, I had previously CTRL-ALT-DEL'd out of the game. I do the same a good bit with my other games, so I don't know if that's related or not.

It's nothing really major, I'm just wondering if anyone's had a similar problem.
 
In Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix GOLD here when the game crashes to the desktop the display coloring is goofed up until the game is restarted and exited. At that the normal desktop is seen. If your model card has vpu recovery make sure that is enabled. Your refresh rate can have an effect at times as well. Many games like a lower refresh rate at higher screen resolutions seen on lcds. Personally I keep it at 70 or 75htz while some recommendations suggest 60htz.
 
my friend had that very problem today which you described, there was a black screen taking up about 75 percent of the screen, and he could manage to open other programs in the background. i am afraid i cant help though, we just ctrl-alt-deleted it
 
No no, this is full screen. Ctrl-alt-delete did NOTHING at this point.

Maybe I wasn't clear in my first post. When I'd CTRL-ALT-DEL out of games, it was usally to check stuff online and what not. It wasn't because of a problem.
 
You simply used the task manager to exit. By the description the games's exits are goofing with the display settings and driver. I've had a few stalls running Half Life 2 that saw some of that. But the crash to desktop smear is what I've seen through the years with several games if the system didn't lock. The reset button saw plenty of use on the older dos/95 games for sure.
