Black Screen on a HP Laptop

I'm asking for a friend who has a HP laptop. I don't know what model number or anything.

The screen turns on but it's black and you can just barely make out the image. Kind of like a tinted screen saver or something. Does it need a new video card or something. Any idea how can it be fixed?

sounds like the backlight has burned out....
normally, u have to buy a whole new screen since its too expensive to buy the actual lights and inverters and install them..

Who told you that?

If you are able to find the specific part for your notebook, it is MUCH cheaper to just replace the backlight rather than the entire screen, as long as the backlight is not completely integrated with the LCD assembly. Also, I believe I have seen generic backlights that you can install into any laptop, although that would require some handiness with a soldering iron and you would need to locate the correct terminals.

try to know first if its under warranty , let hp do their job who knows they might replaced your LCD .......

thanks for the help...it was the backlight that burned out but I haven't heard from my friend in while so I don't know what she ended up doing with it.
