Black screen on start up + Vista update not installing

Hi guys, I've got 2 problems and I'm not sure whether they are linked, or whether this is the right section to post, but I would appreciate your help!

For the last 2 months when I start my computer it will sometimes just go to a black screen and not load. The only way to get the computer to start is to manually turn it off and give it another try.

The second problem started today. When my computer starts it loads up (or doesn't, depending on how its feeling) and goes to a screen where it says 'Configuring updates: Stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete.' The % stays on 0 and then it says 'Shutting down...' it then restarts itself and repeats this process infinitely without installing the updates or letting me reach the desktop.

The second problem is probably the most annoying at the moment as I can't access any parts of my computer before this silly re-occurring Vista update comes up.

My computer is a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo - Only just over a year old.

Any solutions or helpful comments would be much appreciated!
 
I would start by doing a drive diagnostic on the Hard drive. This may be malware related. Do you know if you have a service pack applied to your installation? or is it the original version of Vista?

Do you have another computer that you can put this hard drive in and scan it for viruses/malware?
 
I think its Service Pack 2, but I'm not entirely sure.
If worst comes to worst then I may have to do as you suggested and remove the hard drive but I'd like to see if there are any other solutions first as this seems a drastic measure.
 
So, you can eventually access windows and do things? If so, then download and run Malwarebytes and see if it finds anything and let us know.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here, here, here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

I've sorted out the update problem by running a system restore - but the black screen problem is something that is still happening.

Did you run Malwarebytes yet? Also the black screen is indicating you have a intermittent hardware issue. It could be the memory, hard drive, or some other issue.
