Black screen

I have a Dell Studio 540 with a Nvidia GT630. I have windows 7 32bit and Ubuntu 12.04.5 32bit. When I turn on, the dell logo appears, and the the screen goes black. The CPU is working fine because if I unplug the monitor and then plug it again, the Ubuntu login screen appears and the everything goes black again. I guess is a problem with the drivers but I cant solve it because I cant see anything, or enter a Boot menu, because the monitor is black.
 
I would try making a bootable ISO and see if that gets a black screen as well.

If you can't seem to get it to boot on the ISO, you can just try and unplug your HDD. That should force it to use the USB/DVD.

12.04.05 loses LTS support next year as far as I know, have you considered reinstalling or dist-upgrading?

Thats impossible, because no matter what I do, after it boots it goes black. So even if I press F12 to go into boot options, the screen goes black anyways. Maybe the monitor is fruited I could try with a different monitor.

I obviously meant to try and make the bootable disk from another computer. But yeah, if you can, definitely try another monitor. From your description it sounds like a flaky monitor, and I may have mistakenly assumed you've tried a different one, since it's the obvious step 1 for me :)

I already have a bootable disk. Thats why I said it. Im gona try a different monitor and report back. Thanks!
 
If possible, you can also check if your current monitor has different ports. If you use VGA, try DVI etc. Could be the cable/connector on monitor or PC.
Could be a significantly cheaper option than buying a new monitor :)
