Blank Desktop

Alright, my parents just bought a new Dell Dimension E510 desktop and already there's a problem. I told my parents to just leave the computer and let me set it up, but they were excited about it and felt the need to try. Anyway, I get a call saying there's a problem...the only thing that displays on the monitor is a blank desktop at startup. You can see the wallpaper but the shortcuts will flash for about 10 seconds and then all disappear. You cannot do anything on the computer, however it does not appear to be frozen. The only thing I've accomplished was getting to task manager but nothing else. Do you guys know what's wrong? (because I sure don't :P )

I wish I could tell you more about the problem but I can't because I'm not sure what my parents did and they aren't sure either. If any other info is needed just tell me what and I may be able to help out. Thanks ;)

try reformat it. And then if it works. Install everything back together. It takes 1/2 hour to clean it up.
 
I've experienced similar problems with WinXP systems, quite a few of them Dell's too.

Seeing that you can launch the task manager try shutting down some of the tasks by using the End Task function, it may kick into life, then once you are in, it maybe easier to rectify the problem using the Event viewer.

i agree. being as it's a 9100, it should definatly have the image restore partition.
reboot the system, as soon as it starts coming back up, and you see the dell splash screen, hold down ctrl and start tapping the f11 key. it should take you to a menu with two options. and one of them is to restore your system. choose that option
then agree to the fact of all data being erased. and it should start restoring. it'll take about 10-15 minutes.
if it's still within 21 days, i'd say if the restore don't work, call in to tech support and tell them you want a system exchange becuase it's already having problems.
if it's within 21 days, you can get a new system if you want one. it can take up to 3 weeks though, just to let you know
