Blank Screen on Laptop - Works on TV

Hi all,

The subject says it all. My fiance's laptop boots to a blank screen (with start up sounds). When plugging it into my TV via VGA, everything works normally- which rules out the video card (right?). I was thinking that somehow the monitor cable became disconnected inside the laptop. What do you guys think? Have you witnessed any of these problems before?

A lot of the time it will be the backlight, inverter or both.

Usually if you look at it in a well-lit room at extreme angles you can actually see what's on the screen.
