blank screen

I've searched threads to see if I could find a related problem, but nothing that helped.

My friend just bought a shuttle from another friend. It worked fine and nothing was broken. He then bought a samsung monitor for it. A few weeks later, when he turned on the computer, the boot screen was shown, the login screen was shown, but nothing after that.

after logging in, the screen would go black, and all you can see is the mouse pointer. You can open the task manager but nothing besides that. When turning off the computer, it will make the windows shut down sound.

If anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it.

i would check out the bios

when he starts up the PC and opens the task manager, check to see if Explorer.exe is running....that explorer.exe, not iexplore.exe .
if its not running, hit File -> New Task (Run...) and type in explorer.exe

post back up and tell us what happened

jimkonow - looked up the process, it was running..i stopped it, ran it again, nothing happened. anything else?

ryby2 - how would i go about doing that?

try running windows in safe mode. hit f8 while the computer boots continusaly and slect safe mode

Safe mode didnt work either. Still get the black screen after booting and logging in.

Anything else?

Did he put another HDD from another computer into it?

nope, he never touched it. The problem occurred randomly.
