This is usually caused by the video card's drivers if not the software for it. With an older card the latest update could see problems since the latest is written for newer models and is incompatible with the older model. Or there may be a simple need to remove the current if they were damaged for a fresh update.
Sound drivers are surprisingly another culprit to consider. Besides driver issues a new device added onto the system may be causing a resource conflict. The thing to advise however is taking notes on any information seen when this happens. Often the driver for video or sound will be seen there.
