Blue screen randomly

Hi Iam new here,
I have updated my cpu from Pentium 4 2.53Ghz to 2.8Ghz, my computer was running OK. Then I started to get random blue screens and the computer would shut down.

I though the heatsink and fan needed replacing due to increase in cpu speed, but I have monitored the temperature, idel temperature is 30C and the highest temperature is 53C.

Then I checked the RAM and tested in using memtest86+ and it reported one stick of faulty RAM and I have removed it from the motherboard.

The computer can be lefted on for hours and the blue screen will appear or somedays it does not happen at all.

I though it might be the power supply unit

Please can someone help me it driving my mad

did you run memtest again over the remaining sticks. Memtest is great at picking up errors, but not telling you witch channel is having issues

yes I ran memtest86+ again and pick up no errors.

Then I used a windows based memory testing program and the blue screen poped up again.

Shall I upload the minidump files so you can see what is causing the error.

Thanks Matt

Maybe Power Supply

I read once in a VIA Article that maybe bad power supply voltages may cause that. It was a while ago, and they seemed to have removed the article, sorry! That was that the problem of my last computer, until I replaced my PSU with a higher-wattage one. What wattage do you have currently? Maybe the increase in clock speed may be causing the need for more electricity, but I'm not sure.. Just an idea

Thanks

Also I noticed that the blue screen errors display something about the ntkernal the heart of the OS.

Just had another look at the PSU it says two different wattage DC Output 250W and (+3.3v and +5v= 165W max)

If I upgraded the PSU will this break my MSI MS-6533 motherboard

Thanks Matt

not at all, they are designed to be removed and replaced quite easily.

look for something that is in the region of at least 400 watts, look out especially at the rating on the 12 volt rail, thats the important one in most situations.

also, have a look at this:- PSU 101 - very helpful

Sorry again,
But I can only find a 350W as my case is a mini size and I have found a PSU with only four molex connector, floppy connector, 12V connector amd ATX 20 pin connector. I do not the current on the 12V the PSU is OEM.

Would I be able to use on my system, which is an:-

Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz
80Gb Seagate harddrive
DVD rom drive
CDRW drive
512MB DDR RAM
Geforce 4 MX420

Just to be sure it would be the PSU causing the random restarting due to being underpowered and not a fault with the CPU.

Does anyone know the power consumption of a Pentium 4 2.53Ghz and Pentium 4 2.8Ghz

Sorry again :o

You guys have been so helpful

Thank you

Matt:)

No its a tower, which only allows room for two optical drives and two hard drives. Like the cheap cases at PC world

the only place i shop online for uk delivery doesn't keep micro atx stuff in stock so i couldn't personally recommend any.
the one you spotted doesn't look too good, ive never heard of the brand and there isn't any detail with regard to its spec; also price is a good guide on the quality of a psu.
