Hi,

My grandson's PC has some issues. When starting it up it gets this blue screen and mentions "unmountable_boot_volume". Anyone know what might be wrong?

Thanks

Eddie

The hard drive has errors on it. What brand of hard drive is it? You'll need to run the drive manufacturers diagnostic test to fix the errors.

Do I startup the PC in Safemode with networking and download the following

http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/
(SeaTools for Windows /The quick diagnostic tool that checks the health of your drive. )

and then run the diagnostic tool? thanks

It won't boot in safe mode either. You will have to either make a bootable cd or slave the drive in another system and use seatools for windows.

Download seatools for dos iso. Burn the iso file to a cd and then boot to the cd on machine. Run the long test, will take an hour or so. Or put the drive in another system and download and run seatools for windows.

I am about to run the dos seatools utility. If given the option to repair errors I assume I should say "Yes"? Thanks

At the end of the test it should tell you what was wrong and if it was able to fix it or not.

Results

At the end of the test it should tell you what was wrong and if it was able to fix it or not.

I ran the dos seatools program numerous times and it kept finding bad sectors. The test would onlyr run for about 5 to 10 minutes and I would chose the "repair" options. After running the program about 10 times it gave me the following message "the driver is not responding to commands. Check cables and driver power connections. Long test failed. Sector Repair Failure. Repair was unseccessful on the hard drive." I ran seatools a couple of more times with the same result and message. I guess I have a "Bad" hard drive. What is your recommendation? A new hard drive? Thanks

You will need to determine if its a sata or ide drive and get one that matches. If it requires the wide flat ribbon cable the. It's an ide drive. If it has the smaller cable then its sata.

From your description is sounds like a SATA. The connection cord running from the mother board that plugs into the hard drive is around 1/2" wide, while the power source connection is about 1" wide. SATA right?

Thanks
