Blue Screens and Restarts

hey guys.

ok, my problem is when i start my computer in the morning, this has happened twice now, i startt he computer, the post comes up, then the screen to see if i want to boot form disk, then the windows xp logo with the little blue bar going across the bottom as windows loads. it does this about 15 secs, and then the computer suddenly resets, or restarts itself. it will do this over and over until i try to boot into safe mode, where it comes to the screen in dos with all the commands covering the screen, and then it will restart there too, then start windows normally after that.

other issue, which i feel is related, is that twice i have recieved blue screens and my comp complaining about a hardware issue. one time was with a game, farcry, and another time was burning a cd. this leads me to believe that my dvd rom is "broken".

what ties these two in is that when my computer starts normally, as soon as the windows loading screen goes away, the dvd rom starts spinning at a very high rpm, as i can hear it. it sounds like as if it was burning a disk because it is spinning so fast. on the times the computer resets itself, it is not starting the dvd rom spinning.

i guess my question in a nutshell is, does this sound like a defective dvd rom?

its an Aopen DUW 1616. u have been to the site and dloaded all the drivers. do i need to replace this drive?

Have you tried taking the dvd rom drive off and then starting up. This way we can tell if the dvd rom drive is causing this or not. Try it and see what happens. Then well worry about how the problem should be fixed.

It can't be the powersupply... Because it reboots. Do you have more then one optical drive or is you dvd rom the only one? If it's not the only one you could try to live with just the one except for when you need it you could plug it in(would be a pain in the butt though). This problem doesn't happen every time just every now and then? Strange..

yea, strange is what i said. i have another dvdrom, a sony dru-800a. i LOVE that drive. i think im gonna ommit the "defective" drive all together and get a fan controller or something else to mount in the soon-to-be-available slot. (maybe that cup holder/cigarette lighter-even though i dont smoke :)) thx again guys.

sorry ill finish that now, so check the last piece of hardware that u installed before u got the blue screen of death and make sure it is in working order, i had a modem once and i kept getting the blue screen whenever it was plugged in. it could just be coincidence though

yeah i wouldnt give up so easily, it would be a good idea to just take it out and check for sure if the dvd is the problem...if not, check connections to mobo and maybe resort to creating a backup for your hard drive and just reformatting (thats if you end up thinking its an OS problem)....good luck
