bomberboysk, I'd like you to recommend a build for me. I had planned to use one you posted already but the links no longer work.

Ideally I'd like to stay to $1000 or less. I don't game or overclock, but want a "media machine" with muscle- with more than enough power to run at least two monitors which could have to run multiple video steams. Basically a strong multitasker that can run applications, surf the internet, and play multiple video streams all at the same time. If it's possible to run video to a tv that would be cool too. What do you think?

As for your media machine with muscle, do you need a lot of hard drive capacity?
 
Do you plan to play games with it? If not, you don't really need that powerful of a graphics card. Also are you looking for a matx or atx build?

Comes out at $984

SSD is there to speed up boot times/opening of programs (don't put videos on there, would be a waste of space, only programs need go on there), but if you want to save money, go for a single, faster hard drive instead (Samsung F3 or WD Caviar Black for instance)

If you aren't going to be watching bluray films, take the drive out

I would keep the fans in there because they are very quiet and will keep the internal temps lower, which with the stock CPU HSF, will keep that running slower and quieter. That and they will give more airflow, which you will need because of that passively cooled heatsink on the video card

Before you buy, look at the deals that are on at the egg. I've not put deals because they don't usually last long, so I will end up putting them up and they be gone by the time you order, so be pointless. Using deals you will probably be able to bring down the price alot more

matx = micro atx
atx is a form factor of motherboards.
ATX boards are noticeably rectangular while mATX boards have the same width as ATX, but their length is shorter almost to the point that they're square
 
bomber hasn't even posted in this thread :P

i'd go with aastii's build. great motherboard and psu and good choice on the video card. although you might consider getting an htcp case instead of getting a regular desktop case if you plan to have it in your living room.

yeah, thats pretty much it. Plus the 5570 that Aastii chose uses a heatpipe cooler, so its silent.

Look on the egg at the price of 500GB drives, then at 1TB drives. As an example:

$20 nets you double the capacity. However, with the SSD, you don't need the storage drive to be quick, as it will only be for storage, not for applications so you don't have to worry too much about retreival speeds or rotation speeds because opening a file, some music or a video doesn't use even close to the max speed of a slower storage, dive, so you can get the drive I posted, which has a slower rotation speed and uses less power:

which is only $15 more than the 500GiB Samsung F3. You don't need the storage now, however if you are using it for video and saving videos to your hard drive, you will be surprised how quickly a 500GB drive would fill and how much you need that extra room, and $15 for a massive amount more is much better for price/size ratio, so you get much more for your money

when we mentioned mATX, that is the size of the entire thing.

In terms of size:

full tower>mid ATX>mATX

If you want it to be small and portable, we can change the size of the case and the motherboard so that it is smaller, whilst keeping the rest of the system

That ends up at $620.92 before shipping. Plenty of your budget for a nice set of dual displays, a nice keyboard/mouse, some nice speakers, etc.

At this point in time i would suggest against SSD's for mainstream builds, yes they are quite nice, but their advantages are somewhat limited, and price/GB is still terrible. Its still a few years out until i would start to suggest SSD's for general use builds.

What about wiring? The HDD and ODD don't come with cables. Or should I wait until I get everything and figure it out?
