Boosting a wireless signal

This is my situation, I am having trouble getting a really strong signal throughout my whole house.

I have the router hooked to my desktop in the den down stairs. When using a laptop on the farthest part upstairs you get a really weak signal. Is there anything I could buy to boost the signal of the router?

Change antenna with more dB output one.

I think 7dB directional antenna is ok for home use.
With 15-17dB i was connecting home AP with other on 2 miles distance.
Edit:
Safe distance from 17dB antenna is 2 feets.
It is possible to buy amplifiers from 200mW to 2 watt and fry eggs with microwaves

You can also use a Wireless Access Point to widen the coverage of the signal. Even if you're using an N-series router, which is the high-end class router, a closed area can weaken the signal.
