boot into windows xp takes too long

hi,

My windows xp has been running fine until i tried to change some setting in the registry edit command and i don't remember what i did :(...

Now my pc takes forever when boots up. It's booting up fine to windows xp logo with the progress bar, then from here it took nearly 5 mins to get windows desktop. What is going on ??

If the problem being seen now is from the "oops!" in the registry you should see if you have any system restore points available prior to the time of the edit you should be able to restore the registry to it's previous state. But 5min. to reach the desktop is definitely a Windows problem where the registry is giving a command that can't be executed. Without the reg edit being made it would more likely point at a driver problem or bad install of some new program.
 
when i boot my pc up the first time, it takes ages to load up but after that i restart/re-boot the pc, it seems working perfectly normal. Any ideas??
 
You can try:
Start > Run > Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks
or you can use BootVis as well.
Although I don't think it'll help...
 
Often a good hung driver seeming to clash with another driver or startup will place a drag on Windows. You may want to look over the msconfig startup group to see if disabling a few things other then video and sound will see any slight improvement. Something going wrong with a 3rd party software driver can often gum the works up. Once Windows does fully load the background services simply push the offender out of the way where rebooting goes well since the offender is no longer loaded.

If you have the Windows installation disk available put that in the optical drive and type "sfc /scannow" at the Run prompt and press enter(faster then clicking ok) to let the system tool go through and look for problems with any basic system files. After using BurnOn here two or three times for burning a Linux tool like Gparted onto a cd the third burn will stall until this is run. It verifies and repairs/replaces any of the needed files found goofed up. These two things never hurt to try out.
