If the board defaults hard drives to new or existing is up to the board - i had my Abit KD7A (socket A) that would default to the newest drive, and SATA drives were defaulted secondary. my current board however add's any new drives to the bottom of the boot list.
And even thought the OP is yet to post back here's the deal :
Windows XP rewrites the MBR, so install that AFTER 2000 and edit the boot order from within XP, or install either or first, and install GRUB. GRUB can be found at:
http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/
In all honesty though, i suggest just diagnosing the heating problem in the XP machine you recieved - it's defaulted XP so it's got a 99% chance of being newer and faster - it's probably dust, or a dead fan or something. Then you can just pop the 2000 HDD in there, and copy any files over to the XP drive, and tada.
