Boot problem... please help!

I use XP pro. I recently installed 4 gigs of RAM in my computer. I went and did the /3 gig switch trick (changing the little boot ini text file thing). It seemed to be working fine, but the main program I installed it for, crashed a few times after I did it. So I decided to try and put everything back to the way it was...

I messed up somewhere. Sorry if the details arent perfect, this happened this morning just before I had to run out the door for work...

Basically my computer starts up, gives me 3 options in the black & white menu. The options are...

Windows XP Professional
(blank)
Default Startup (or something like that)

No matter which one I click on, it basically just goes through the motions and eventually comes back to that same menu. Is there any way I can go in and restore the boot file to the way it was originally? I think that would solve my problem. Maybe not?

I REALLY dont want to restore my computer. I have a meeting tonight and I have to burn some CD's w/ info that is on my home computer. So I will basically have 2 hours to get home after work and fix this problem. If anyone can help me out with this, I will be forever grateful. :)

well, you could try pressing F8 to boot to safe mode and then try to edit the file from there. But then again that might not work if you were messing with the boot.ini file. You might be able to get away with a windows repair install. All of your data would still be there but some of your programs might not work. Thats the only way i'm sure would work.

I ended up doing that. I have been thinking about doing a hard restore lately. I'm going to go in back up some stuff, then erase everything. Thanks for the help.
