boot problem

my computers been running good, no problems

last night i decided to shut it down before i went to bed

i go to cut it on this afternoon, it starts to boot--lasts like 3 seconds then cuts off, like no power or something (but it has power, all the lights on my mobo are still on)

and then i either have to wait 2-3 minutes before it will try to power up via the power button, OR i go around back and hit the kill switch on my power supply for about 5 seconds then it will automatically try and boot up when it has power again

it dies about 3 seconds into the boot up, i coudlnt even get to bios if i wanted to, its such a quick shut down that my monitor isnt even getting a signal

any ideas?--ive tryed unplugging my ram one stick at a time, took my video card out, unplugged usb cords for the front of my case, took my sound card out

i cant get it to boot up and stay up unless i take the atx 12v or what ever it is out at the top, and then it doesnt do anything but everything DOES stay running, but no signal to the monitor

specs are in my sig if you need them

Supply or board likely supply! Try turning the breaker off on the supply, unplug the ac cord, and then after turning the breaker switch back on hit the power button and hold that until 1/2 minute or so passes by.

After that turn the breaker off again if you are worried any there and replug the ac cord back in to see what happens when you try powering the system up. Sounds like the supply needs a good recycling to see if there's a bad cap inside it and the supply isn't being regulated properly.

Simple answer - If your P/S has a kill switch on the back, turn it off/ if not unplug the P/S and hit your power button a few times to discharge the P/S. Turn the switch back on or plug it back in and see what happens. If this doesnt help, try resetting your bios next.

ive unplugged/hit the kill switch on the back of the ps and same result--

and i cant get to my bio's, i hit clear CMOS button but it still wont boot

Starting not to sound good. Try unplugging the power to everything except the 24 pin power connector and the 4/8 pin CPU power connector and use one stick of memory, plus the video card. Dont disconnect the CPU fan.

Disconnect the power to all drives/floppy, fans, except the CPU fan, remove any PCI cards. See if you can get a bios screen.

the power button is connected to two wires when you push it the two wires are supposed to touch each other and then move away as you remove your hand but if they stay on touch for a while the computer shuts down (as if you pushed the button again to turn it off) so i guess you have to open the case cut both wires and make them touch by yourself and move them away again

Well I would not cut the wires, just ground the 2 power switch pins on the board with a jumper or small screw driver.

i have an onboard power switch, it does the same thing when i use it, also

ive unplugged power to everything one at a time--cd rom, hard drive, fans, swapped out the ram, all same results--3 seconds untill the crash

just for the hell of it i unplugged the 8 pin, and left the 24 pin connected, it cut on and stayed on but didnt send any signals (my monitor never came on)...im sure it just wasnt processing or something due to the 8 pin not being connected?

Well if you tried connecting the 2 power pins and same result and when you disconnect the 8 pin it stays on then i suppose its the P/S try testing another P/S and see what happens

It sounds like overheating to me.
Sometimes the thermal paste on the CPU goes south. Remove the CPU fan. Clean off the old paste from it and the CPU. Be gentle but firm. Finish the clean up with some high quality isoproponal alcohol on Q-tips. Reapply some thermal paste to the CPU. Arctic 5 is about the best. Clean the fan and its fins. Reseat the CPU fan. It could work.

I don't know if the last message got through but it sounds like it's overheating. Replace the thermal paste and make sure your CPU fan is CLEAN.

ok, turns out it was the mobo, i swapped out motherboard, but now when it gets to the screen where it says ''microsoft'' and the bar (on vista) starts to go left to right, (loading) it blue screens flickers and then restarts, its too fast for me to read it

i can get into bios, and i have had it trying to repair my computer but every time i try to reboot it does the same thing

any ideas?
