Boot problem!

Last night when I shut my computer down it did some kind of windows update. When I turned it on this morning it said there was a hardware problem and that I needed to either put in my windows disc to repair or restart and choose and option by pressing f8. I was going to choose restart by last know good configuration. So I restarted my laptop and now all I get is a solid black screen. Nothing at all not even the White Writing on startup.

I have a 1.6ghz 2gb ram 160gb harddrive windows 7 notebook.

Only installed windows 7 on a brand ne hardrive 2 weeks ago.

Any help appreciated.
