Boot Problems

I'm troubleshooting a laptop and in need of help...
You may have seen a thread or two a while back about this laptop, but anyway:

I just installed Slysoft's CloneDVD and AnyDVD software on the laptop. When I went to restart, it seemed to take a little longer. And then when I booted up, it made it passed the Windows loading screen and went to a black screen. It sits there for maybe 4-5 minutes before making it to the login screen, and then it seems as if explorer.exe hangs (no start bar or icons, but I can open task manager). Then I did safemode, and it took equally long for it to boot, and again, no Icons or start menu. The machine did pass a chkdsk I ran, so I uninstalled the programs and did a system restore for a few days before. This fixed nothing. Which leaves me where I am.

I have no more ideas at the moment

Booting from a disc?

Could it be trying to boot from a DVD or other disc attached to the computer? I once had a similar problem where my PC was trying to boot from a DVD drive that I attached to the computer via USB.

If that doesn't do it, can you tell me exactly where it hangs? Before or after Windows starts loading?
