Boot up problem

i have an old PC that i bought from best buy a few years ago, and when i would turn it on, at about the time it should post i'd hear a long BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP. if i dont turn the PC off it'll do it over n over. i used to be able to turn it on and off a couple times and eventually it'd boot up properly. i always left it on so i basically ignored the problem. i sold it to my friend however and he went to turn it on and it does the long beep, and no matter how many times we turn it off and on, it wont come on. so looks like we gotta fix it. any ideas as to what it could be? sounds like it's coming from somewhere where the expansion slots are

First of all, when you say that you're turning it 'on and off', are you actually shutting it down or just turning it off?? If you're just turning the power on and off, several times in a row, that can damage your hard drive!! From what you said, it sounds like it's coming from the PC speaker, which is probably signaling some kind of error! Will the machine even turn on??

holding power button to turn it off, which yeah i know is bad. no speakers were hooked up. it's coming from the mobo, and i rechecked all the connections. and no it wont turn on

Were you having any issues with it, other than the loud beep, last time that you used it? How long has it been since you've tried to use the machine? It is quite possible that you did some damage to your HD with all the hard shutting down.. Also, when you sold it to your friend, is it possible that it was jolted around pretty good while transporting it?

Is it one long continuous beep or a short or long beeping?
