I get this error:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
/windows/system32/config/system

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

I tried going into the repair windows (command prompt-like) and using CHDSK /r or whatever, spent like an hour running that and claimed to have repaired a few things, and I still get this message. Is there another way to try repairing this? I have way too much to lose, I dont wanna format the HD. Thanks.

I can't figure out how to do a repair install.

To setup Windows
XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation
using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without
installing Windows XP, press F3.

I hit ENTER to try the repair installation, and after hitting F8 for windows agreements, my only options is to either Setup UP windows on my hard-drive, or delete partition. Theres no "repair" or "repair install" option.

not good!
