Booting And Shut Down

I have a dell studio laptop with vista installed. It ran fine until a few days ago when it didnt shut down, it went to the "logging off" screen and just stayed on that for about an hour until i opted to hold the power button to turn it off.
I tried installing the updates to no avail.

Booting was similar. I could get to the log in page and log in fine, but once logged in the screen would just stay black with the cursor in the middle, i could still move the cursor.
To reboot it i have to start it in safe mode > Hold the button to turn off and then restart it in normal settings.

Does anyone have a fix for this? Also im contemplating re-installing the OS. Would this help at all?

Yes, re-installing the OS would fix your issue. This is the blunt force approach. If you don't want to go that drastic right away, you should try system restore from safe mode and revert back to a restore point before you ran the update.

ive had this problem before i booteed into safe mode and changed the programs that loaded when windows boots, in msconfig, and i saw what was causing and turned it off.

Ah Fixed. Turns out it was the Vista service pack that failed to update because i was running other programmes.
PS It didnt show anything in safe mode either
