Bother installing video card; help appreciated.

Hello chaps, I recently bought the new Sapphire Radeon HD4870 x2 video card but I'm having a spot of bother getting it to work. I've plugged it all in properly, and it's receiving power since the fan spins and the light underneath is on. However, the computer doesn't seem to recognise that it even exists. When I start up I hear a couple of beeps and a message on the screen saying "Alert! Error initializing PCI Express slot one. Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run setup utility" (or words to that effect). I should state that the only way I'm able to see this message at all is by plugging the monitor into the onboard monitor slot since when I plug it into the video card there is no signal received (so the monitor tells me). Another thing which may be of note is that I am using a flexi riser card for the PCI slot since that is the only way I can fit the monster of a card in the case. However, the riser card seems to be functioning perfectly well as I had no problems when I used it with my previous card. I am aware that the HD4870 x2 is PCIe 2.0 and my machine will be an earlier version, but my understanding was that it is supposed to be backwards compatible.

I can post my dxdiag report if it is of any use (apologies: I don't know which specific bits are relevant so you'll have to tell me):

Any help, advice and suggestions would be appreciated. Cheers.
